Why is age and source verification important?
Age and source verification is important because some domestic and international consumers want assurances that someone knows where the beef came from and how old it was at the time of harvest. In exchange for this information, they are willing to pay more for the beef they purchase.
How much can I make from age and source verification?
The exact premium is subject to a number of factors, including available supply, market demand, and how the cattle are marketed. In 2007, MICRO PVP customer premiums averaged $2-3/cwt.
Why am I required to use a USDA program? Isn’t a signed affidavit good enough?
USDA maintains specific policies that establish minimum criteria to verify age on animals. This policy stipulates that age information must be verified by a third party. Therefore, signed affidavits alone are insufficient for age verification.
What is the difference between the MICRO PVP and other PVP and QSA programs?

What about requirements for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) and country-of-origin labeling (COOL)?
The MICRO PVP requires the use of ISO-compliant EID tags which are compatible with NAIS requirements. The MICRO PVP also maintains “Born in USA” and “Born and Raised in USA” claims which meet all COOL requirements. Bottom-line, if you use the MICRO PVP, you will be fully prepared for all legislative and regulatory programs, as we understand them today.
